Tarot Review - March 2021 - October 2022
In early 2021, I got really into tarot cards. Like, really into it. I went from owning zero decks in January 2021 to owning 40+ today. The first deck I ever got, and my favorite, is the Light Seer’s Tarot. I do my daily pull of three cards from this deck. This entire post may seem like a commercial for that deck, lmao, but it is my favorite, so fair warning.
I am also a data nerd - I do data manipulation for my day job, and I am well-know for my stats savvy in my hobbies. So of course I had to keep on with that trend in tarot. I purchased a tarot journal on Etsy, and I used it to catalog my daily pulls. I did do several other pulls over the course of 18 months, with different decks, and some I wrote down, some I didn’t. But almost all data in this post comes from pulls done most weekdays with the Light Seer Tarot.
I wrote down the 3 cards I pulled daily, and used this journal to look for trends, that kind of thing. I enjoy tarot cards not because I feel they can tell the future, but because the meaning of what you pull is quite versatile, and overall usually positive. They are good reminders to keep in mind what is best for me and to trust myself. But at the same time, it is pretty eerie how sometimes what you pull correlates very well to what is going on in your life.
Total cards drawn from late March 2021 to October 22, 2022 - 949
Major Arcana - 277 - 29%
Cups - 174 - 18%
Discs - 175 - 18%
Swords - 133 - 14%
Wands - 190 - 20%
Minors (1-10) - 484 - 51%
Court Cards - 188 - 19%
Most Frequent Cards (Total Times Drawn - % out of 949 draws - % out of cards in deck (78):
Ace of Wands - 22 - 2.3% - 28%
Four of Discs - 22 - 2.3% - 28%
Death - 20 - 2% - 26%
Page of Wands - 20 - 2% - 26%
Ace of Cups - 19 - 2% - 24%
Seven of Wands - 19 - 2% - 24%
Sun - 19 - 2% - 24%
Ten of Cups - 18 - 1.8% - 23%
World - 18 - 1.8% - 23%
The overall stats aren’t a huge surprise - the journal suggests that the average pull for the major arcana is 23%, and I pulled 29%, a bit higher than average. The major arcana cards typically represent life lessons and big themes in your life. The way I view my life and spent my time did change quite a bit in 2020/2021 (as I expected it did for most people). I decided to retire from roller derby (though I did wind up going back), and my hobbies shifted to writing - I probably wrote close to 1M words in this time period.
In that same vein, it is not surprising the wands suite was the largest suite I pulled. The wand suite is usually associated with intuition, creativity, ambition and expansion, as well as primal energy. It is associated with the element of fire, as is Sagittarius (my sun sign), I definitely had many times where felt like I was overflowing with passion and ideas as I discovered exchanges and how much I enjoyed writing.
The Discs suite is second, just barely, and that is definitely from how many discs cards I pulled in 2022. Over half of the pulls for the Four of Discs, which is one of the most prevalent cards in my daily pulls, was between March and October 2022. This is when my family was working with a financial advisor and trying to plan for the future, so interesting how that came into play.
In looking at my top cards pulled:
Ace of Wands - This card is all about potential. I loved pulling this card, because it’s such a positive card to me, all about what could be, creativity flowing, and working to channel those ideas into an actual finished concept, be it a fic or a or a meal or a relationship or whatever. Plus, it’s beautiful in the Light Seer deck. The majority of the time I pulled this card upright.
Four of Discs - This card is about stability, saving money, and control. I pulled it fairly regularly towards the end of 2021, and then it disappeared from April to July 2022. Then I pulled it six times from Aug 9 to Sept 18, which is around when I started thinking about how to further save for the future. This is around when my boss of 6 years left my unit, and while I still feel secure in my job, I know that could change on a dime as my work life changed.
Death - Whew. This card isn’t scary to me, it’s all about change, and there was definitely change over this time period. I pulled this fairly regularly over the 18 month period the journal covered, with August 2021 having the most at 3 pulls. There were some personal changes regarding trying to figure out what birth control worked the best for me, and at my job with my boss leaving. I pulled this upright 50% of the time, which I also find interesting. I always took this card as a reminder to be open to change and keep an open mind.
It has a lovely art in Light Seer’s, but the art in the Corrupted Tarot is a favorite as well.
Page of Wands - Another card about new ideas, discovery, and limitless potential. The reverse urges the reader to not limit themselves, and to not force an idea out that isn’t ready - something that definitely resonated with me in my writing. The art on this for Light Seer is also so joyful; it always makes me smile when I see it.
Ace of Cups - Gosh, do you see a trend? Another card about creativity, fulfillment, following your emotions/gut, and not repressing your intuition.
Seven of Wands - This card is about challenge, competition, feeling overwhelmed at times, and not giving up. This idea definitely applies to some of my writing, as I felt like giving up on some ideas, but also in regards to my work. I was challenged at work a lot this year, and I used this as a reminder that I can deal with the pressure and to be honest with myself with what opportunities and ideas I wanted to pursue.
A couple of other cards that I felt came up in key moments in my life were the Tower and the Chariot. Last year, my husband went in the hospital for 10 days with severe back issues. We have a child, he was 7 then, and I was juggling all the things. During this time, I pulled the tower twice (out of 11 times total during the 18 months), and the chariot reversed twice (out of 15 times). The chariot reversed, I’ve heard described as “you’re in the chariot, but you have no control of where it’s going, you’re just along for the ride,” and that definitely felt applicable to that time in my life.
I’ve started on a new journal, and am interested to see what my cards look like this year!
