This is a lovely look at what Rita went through during her time at Verdun, and what happened after the movie. The writing is lovely, and the pacing is exquisite - read it if you’ve seen the movie, and if you haven’t seen the movie, definitely check it out!

By all accounts, she shouldn’t have been there; they’d known for a week that a horrible stormfront was due to drift through the northeast, and Marta had meant to be off the property before the weather got really bad.
But things had progressed faster than anticipated, the snow and wind around Harlan’s house initially mild enough that they didn’t realize how bad it was getting. By the time it registered – when Joni and Meg arrived laden down with presents, stomping clumps of snow from their shoes and huffing about how bad the roads were – it was too late.
