Hi, and welcome to this week's installment of the Guardian novel readalong! ♡

Here are last week's chapters, and you can find all previous discussions in the schedule posts (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5), or via the !readalong tag.

This week's chapters:

Chapter 23: The branch of the Great Divine Tree protects Zhu Hong who stayed behind at the Yanluo Courts. While she's talking about the branch with Fourth Uncle, it grows a third bud. The "youth" who turned out to be a gui throws Chu Shuzhi off the bridge. Guo Changcheng jumps after him, leaving the soul bottles behind.

Chapter 24: During the ritual, lao-Li remembers and confesses that three hundred years ago he stole Daqing's bell to cure his bone cancer. Shen Wei uses the Hallows to reseal the Four Pillars. During the last step (the Soul-Guarding Lamp) Shen Wei erases all of Zhao Yunlan's memories of their relationship, and sacrifices himself.

The corresponding part in the Chinese version on JJWXC/the fan translation starts a little less than halfway through chapter 105 and goes up to the end of that chapter.

How impressive is Guo Changcheng's courage now? Should Daqing forgive lao-Li? Do you prefer the novel version or the drama version of their backstory? How about the story of Zhu Hong's branch so far? Did Shen Wei's change of heart and self-sacrifice surprise you? How do you feel about what he did?

01. One place you volunteer (or would like to)? Why?
I would like to do some environmental volunteering, even if it's just helping picking up trash.

02. One book you'd like to see made into a movie? Why?
God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert. I'm mainly curious just want to see how this can be done, and if done right I want to see unsuspecting people's reactions to it.

03. One creature (living, extinct, or mythical) you'd like for a pet? Why?
A wolf.

04. One place on Earth you'd like to visit? Why?
I'm going to be very generic and say everywhere. I'm very curious about the world, and I just want to experience everything there is from different places and cultures to just marveling at the world around us.

05. One talent or skill you'd like to develop? Why?
There's honestly so much, but I've been wanting to have the skill to create fanworks like fanvids, icons, and fanart, all which require different skillsets but it's something that I've been incredibly impressed by as well as envious of whenever I encounter them. I have ideas of what I want to create, and knowing that there are tutorials and programs available it's just a matter of finding the time and knowing where to start.

Journaling: Life in fandom goes through ups and downs. Reminisce about the "wild ride" of your time in fandom or in other online communities.

I never really had a "wild ride" during my time in fandom, not personally anyway, lol. There was and still is lots of drama in some of my fandoms, like AtLA, but I generally stayed on the perimeter.

Hello, and welcome to the Ships Crossing Exchange! We are a multifandom exchange for fanfiction, fanart, and podfic that celebrates crossover and fusion pairings.

Ships Crossing is a bit of an unusual exchange. Even if you’ve participated in other multifandom exchanges, please read our rules, particularly for nominating and signing up. Contact the mods at shipscrossingmod@gmail.com with any questions.

Nominations and Eligibility

Here is how we will define a crossover pairing for the purposes of this exchange:

A crossover pairing involves any two or more characters from different canons.

If their canons interact, the characters in the ship can’t have interacted canonically/on-screen. This includes crossover episodes between shows such as the episode combining Brooklyn Nine-Nine and New Girl as well as cameos of a character mainly in one Star Trek show in another Star Trek show. Characters that interact in these crossovers, such as Jake Peralta and Jessica Day, are ineligible as a ship pairing for this exchange. Characters that didn’t meet, like Rosa Diaz and Schmidt, would be eligible. Characters that don’t interact on-screen but are mentioned to have met are also eligible as a crossover ship.

Although we recognise that the same character can be very different across adaptations, to make it simple, we won’t accept crossovers across adaptations of the same canon. (At our discretion, we will consider canons that are very loosely inspired by another, like House by Sherlock Holmes or O Brother, Where Art Thou by the Odyssey, to be distinct from one another for this purpose.)

For example:

Sherlock Holmes (Elementary)/John Watson (Sherlock - ACD) is ineligible.
Sherlock Holmes (Elementary)/Dr. Gregory House (House) is eligible.

Feel free to ask as many clarifying questions as you need, but this will largely operate on the honour system, with some light mod checking, since we can’t be familiar with every fandom out there.

Nominated ships can include characters from any fandom, with the following caveats:

RPF nominations should be people at least 18 years of age and famous in their own right. Mods reserve the right to remove nominations for serial killers, Nazis, etc.

Original Work is ineligible for this exchange. You are, however, welcome to nominate something like Edmund Pevensie (Narnia)/Original Jedi Character (Star Wars).

You may also nominate ships in the form Din Djarin (The Mandalorian)/Any (Creator’s Choice of Fandom), where “Any” could be something like “Any Woman” or “Any Warrior.”

For big, interconnected fandoms, you may nominate however you like. (We will not be matching on fandom, only on ships.)

Romantic/sexual (/) and platonic (&) relationships are both allowed and encouraged.

[New for 2025: Please nominate characters alphabetically by name.

When choosing which fandom to nominate when it comes to big umbrella fandoms, like Star Wars, feel free to nominate as specifically or generally as you like. We won’t be matching on fandoms, only ships–the fandom tags are just to make requests easier to browse. As long as you disambiguate your ship with the specific version you’re interested in, someone else can match on that ship, whether or not they use the same umbrella fandom to request or offer it.

Nominations can be made under any of the appropriate fandoms. If CCoF (Creator’s Choice of Fandom) is involved, please nominate your ship under the other fandom(s). If one of the fandoms is more likely to cause confusion than the other, perhaps because it doesn’t have a canonical tag or has many adaptations, consider nominating the tag under the trickier fandom.]

Mods will associate the tag with the other fandom(s) manually, so please be specific with your disambiguations, to help us associate your nomination with the correct additional fandom(s). You’re welcome to comment at the Nominations Station post with clarification information as well.

Well-behaved socks (second accounts) will be allowed, keeping in mind that a work must be created by each account.

Requests

While the form will ask for all the fandoms of each request to make it easy to find requests for your fandoms, Ships Crossing does not match on fandoms. We match only on ships.

[New for 2025: Each request should contain a distinct combination of crossovers that all have one fandom in common.] For example, a Narnia request might contain

Edmund Pevensie (Narnia) & Xie Lian (Heaven’s Official Blessing),
Lucy Pevensie (Narnia) & Any Hobbit (Lord of the Rings),
Tumnus (Narnia) & Any Hobbit (Lord of the Rings) & Xie Lian (Heaven’s Official Blessing)

You may make 1-10 requests, each with 1-20 relationships. You may request art, fic, podfic, or two or three of any of these mediums.

While we will do our best to find replacement creators for anyone whose original creator defaults, we will only delay reveals for outstanding PHs that meet minimum requirements for a guaranteed gift. For this minimum, the ships you request must be from at least four fandoms in at least five combinations that don't all have the same fandom in common. For example, if requesting ships with characters from fandoms A, B, C, and D, five combinations might look like A/B, A/C, B/C, B/D, and C/D. But a sign-up that looks like A/B, A/C, A/D, A/B/C, A/B/C/D would be asked to add a request that does not include A. You may request fewer fandoms, but we cannot guarantee a gift for you!

Optional details and prompts are up to you. For instance, you might like to suggest how you’d like the characters and settings to interact. (Is Narnia on Naboo now, or did Susan go through a portal to land there?)

Please clearly indicate any DNWs (do not wants) that would ruin a gift for you in the optional details box. Any DNWs in a letter (if you provide one) can’t be enforced by the mod team. We also can’t enforce subjective DNWs like “character bashing.”

Offers

You may make 1-10 offers with 1-20 relationships and 1-3 media (fic and/or art and/or podfic) in each. As long as there’s someone you can create for, you may offer only one ship total!

If your offers don’t match any requests when signups close, we will contact you. You’ll have 48 hours to amend your signup to match to someone, or drop out of the exchange. After 48 hours with no response, we will delete your signup.

Assignments

You will receive an assignment that matches one of your offer(s) on relationship and medium.

In order to fulfill your request, you must write a complete story of at least 1,000 words, create a piece of clean (as in, cleaned up from the sketch stage) artwork, or create a podfic of a complete fanfic of at least 1,000 words. If on paper, art must be unlined paper. Icons, manipulations, and other pieces including images you did not create are not eligible.

The work you create must be in a medium requested by your recipient, focus on a relationship they requested, and abide by their DNWs.

No part of your assignment may be created by “AI” (artificial neural network) programs such as ChatGPT, or, in the case of art, programs like Midjourney or DALL-E.

Treats

Treats are gifts written for specific recipients or for the collection. They do not have to meet the minimum requirements of an assignment, but they must still focus on a requested relationship, be in a requested medium (unless otherwise indicated in the recipient’s signup), and abide by DNWs.
