I am still thinking near-constantly about James Sunderland and, going by my experience with the original Silent Hill 2, will be doing so for the next twenty years, but I can spare some time to talk about a little indie game nobody's heard of.

A few weeks ago, [personal profile] proustbot made a post about Death Trick: Double Blind, a murder mystery game taking inspiration from Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick. I like Ace Attorney a lot, and I absolutely adore Ghost Trick, so I was tempted into checking it out.

I stressed myself out more than necessary while playing Death Trick, I think! The game has a time mechanic; you have a certain number of time slots in an hour, and actions like questioning a suspect will take up a slot. Sometimes, these actions will lead to new evidence items that you can use for further questioning.

When I ran into a long sequence where I wasn't getting any new evidence, I started to freak out; was I asking all the wrong questions? Was I going to run out of time and fail to solve the case?

I think the issue here is that I'm used to games automatically moving the plot along once you have all the information you need. Because things weren't moving on, I assumed I was missing something. In fact, I'd already gathered all the necessary information; the reason I wasn't getting new evidence was that I already had everything. But that's not what moves the story along; the story only moves along once a certain amount of in-game time has passed. I should have just relaxed and enjoyed having non-plot-essential conversations with the characters to pass the time.

Anyway! Because my misunderstanding of the mechanics led to me constantly feeling I was playing the game wrong, I started to get a little frustrated with it, although I was enjoying the writing. But then it won me back over with an excellent little mystery-story moment: I noticed a small detail and went 'wait, that's weird??' and started trying to make sense of it, and, in pulling that one thread in my mind, I suddenly found myself unravelling a huge knot of mysteries, some of which I hadn't realised were mysteries until that moment. It was extremely satisfying!

Spoilery details on my sudden revelation below the cut:

Spoilers for Death Trick: Double Blind. )

There is no Death Trick: Double Blind fanfiction on AO3, and I doubt there's a market for any, but a part of me still feels I should write fanfiction where the Detective and the Magician make out.

There's a Cozy Fantasy Book Blast happening, and I picked up Good Neighbours by Stephanie Burgis, and Tsumiko and the Enslaved Fox by Forthright. Speaking of cozy, I had a conversation on the FaRo discord about project-hopping, because while I know I'll return to angsty paranormal romance in future projects and am committed to writing Book Two of Bloodhunt Academy right now, I need to have a cozy fantasy writing project ongoing alongside. The cozy dragon romantasy is what I'm eyeing right now. While they're two different vibes, I'm going to keep them on the same pen name (I looked at my collection of book ideas and realised I'm not a writer who can come up with similar things for long in the first place).

I've been tasked not only to make challah tomorrow, not just one cake for my dad's book group, but two cakes for a small party he's hosting. The request was only for one cake for the party, and there's no way I'm making only one cake when I can manage two. It'll be a long day of baking. I welcome the work. While the work's helped by already having a lot of what I need for the cakes, the time it'll take is what I'll need to look into - dividing it up, assessing how best to parse it out, that kind of thing.

In addition to all the other chores and errands of the day.

I've sent two fics off to beta readers, and I've got that last original project which I need to start tackling to edit. That there's a very nice feeling by itself, too. Just going from one project right to the next. It's not always something I can pull off, and I value it when I can manage.

    Merry Everything!

I hope everyone is doing well. I am going through a mental health breakdown. The last few years battling cancer took its toll. But, I am almost 2 years into remission and I have some wonderful caregivers helping me through this rough patch. So grateful for this community because it gives me a chance to look at everyone's lists to see if there are any wishes that I can grant (which is pretty uplifting right now.) Here's mine:

    Gifts for everyone:

Battling Cancer has taught me two things that I really want to pass on.

    1. Your time is more valuable than money
. Not everyone will be worth your time. For those that are, please tell them how much you care about them and how much they mean to you. Tell them often. Go on that outing, take that picture, call that friend. Anything can and does happen. You never want to regret time lost and you never want them to suffer with your loss.

    2. Work on your baggage. Unpack that stuff. A lot of it was hand-me-downs anyway. You down need to carry all that stuff that just weighs you down and makes life harder. Find a therapist, a shadow work book, a faith leader - someone to help you dissect your mental junk drawer and put things in a perspective that heals you. Don’t wait…deal with your baggage so that you can live better now instead of later.

    My wishes:

    3. Movie, series, or documentary recommendations - I'm way behind the curve, so if you have seen something good that you recommend, let me know. I have full access to a library and I am not afraid to use it. Any genre - I also have access to Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO/Max, and many free services like YouTube.

    4. Enamel pins - I collect and wear enamel pins - they can be any kind/theme.

    5. Whimsical care package - My aesthetic is a combination of goblin/gremlincore, dark fairy/cottagecore, and witchcore. I don’t have any major food allergies or sensitivities. I love nature and nature colors. I believe in fairies, elementals, and forest spirits. But overall, I am a big child so I’m pretty easy to please. I am autistic, so no clothing, lotions, cosmetics, or overpowering smells.

    6. Tarot/oracle decks - I collect and read these for myself. I will absolutely take a used, well kept deck.

    7. Resources - I am deconstructing from internalized racism, patriarchy, ableism, etc. - I welcome books, sites, Ted talks, or any other resources you may have that would help me on my journey. I am here to listen, learn, and appreciate.

    8. Recommendations for books by or about marginalized voices: POC, Native, LGBTQIA, Disabled, etc. Genre doesn't matter, I read everything. This is a princely gift!

    9. Music recommendations - Hit me with your latest earworm, favorite band or artist, or song that hits you in the feels. Bonus for a themed playlist (I am on Spotify).

    10. Cat food - My boy’s favorite flavors are Fancy Feast Pate tender chicken and liver,; Fancy Feast cod, sol, and shrimp feast; and the delectables chicken and vegetable push up. My boys are Bodhi (16), Wilbur (14), Henry (10), and Jasper (6) and they are all such great cats.

NOTE: I am absolutely ok with hand-me-downs, thrifted, and used items.

I spent much of the morning walking to the Walk In Centre in the city, and then walking back. The Centre itself was emptier than I'd ever seen it before—just four people in front of me, and when I left, there was one person who looked as if she was waiting for a lift home.

Why, you are agog to know, why did I attend the walk-in centre? Because in the middle of the night I woke up literally gasping for breath. It felt as though my entire throat was clogged with something, and trying to haul in breaths resulted in little, noisy gasps and not very much air at all. Horrible sensation. Frightening. Anyway. I emerged with a prescription for penicillin to attack the infection in my upper airway and (possibly) right lung. Ick. Weird thing is how mostly-normal I feel during the day!

One thing it was really nice to feel, again, was how pleasant it is to be able to walk. I walked to the centre, sat for a few minutes, walked back home, nipped into the house to go to the loo, and continued on up the road to the pharmacy for my prescription, bought a bagful of stuff in Aldi, and walked home, and my hips are fine. Back before I got arthritis, I never thought about how good it feels to be able to walk, but it does, it really does.

    Well, darn.

I found a way to access my old LJ albums, but then discovered the pics I really wanted were stored on my personal website which...I think I relinquished access to back around 2012, and which was never archived...

    DAMMIT.

I didn't think to download it before they went bye byes.

There's a part of me that wonders if I have the old HDs which contained photos from...oh, a decade ago, plus probably change.

Anyway, reading through my old LJ entries has been a blast. So many people, many of whom vanished from the intarwebs, some of whom may have renamed and just not kept up, some of whom I am vaguely in contact with...and some of who have migrated over to DW and are still here!

    Amazing.

    --

So cousin will not be doing Christmas at his place this year - it's an 'off' year with his wife's family. So we are no-go for Christmas Day.

    My options are:
    1. Quietly do nothing.
    2. Volunteer.
    3. Offer to host for 'orphans'

I will most likely end up at #1.

It's a bit late to volunteer, and I asked a friend (birthday twin) who has no family here in Sydney if she and her family would like to come around for Christmas lunch, but she has guests and a lot of things are up in the air for her. I might put up an invite for a local 'host a sister' meet up, but I doubt that anyone will want to meet with a stranger on Christmas Day.

It might be time to accept that the 'relatives Christmas' will only be happening every second year from now on and to plan accordingly. *sigh*

Before he died and was reborn as a creature, not a man, Louis preferred the night. In this city that stretches and groans and howls to life at dusk, he had no reason to favour the sun. His business was the night. People like him, that is to say pimps and grifters, came to bed long after dawn and slept past noon.

It wasn't until he lost the sun that he learned it was something that could be missed.

Though even winters in New Orleans are mild and summer nights leave shirt collars clinging to sweat-slick necks like desperate hands, there is a special kind of warmth in sunlight on the skin. It reeks of childhood and the garden and the roof, of sunrise with his brother.

“I don’t miss the sun,” he will say to a jaded reporter on the balcony of his Dubai altar a hundred years from now. “The reminders it carries.” And it will be true then. But here is a man who ran through the street and nearly burned to death on the first morning he carried the dark gift. And here is a man who grieves his brother, not just one life lost but a thousand possibilities with it.

Today's December talking meme prompt is from [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt and it is: places which have had the greatest impact on you as a person, or which you strongly associate with a particular period in your life.

I think it will surprise no one to discover that I'm someone who feels a lot of intense feelings about specific landscapes and places, so when I saw this prompt, I felt a) very enthusiastic and b) a bit daunted, as there are so many places I could talk about here! So I've decided — to keep things manageable — to limit this to one type of place per decade of my life.
